U.S. Department of State - Pathways Internship Program

The Pathways Internship Program is a paid federal opportunity that places high school through graduate students in part-time or full-time roles at the U.S. Department of State and other federal agencies. Interns assist with policy, administrative, technical, or communications work, contributing to real projects that support U.S. foreign affairs. Positions are offered year-round, and some may be remote or in-person depending on agency needs.

Eligibility and Application Information

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 16 years old, and enrolled in a high school, college, or university (full- or part-time). Applications are submitted through USAJOBS.gov, and require a federal résumé, transcript, and sometimes a short statement or references. Most positions open between October and March, and fill quickly—so early application and account setup on USAJOBS is highly recommended.

Pay

High school students usually start at the GS-1 or GS-2 pay scale, earning roughly $15–$20 per hour, depending on location. Interns may receive paid sick and annual leave, and those working 130+ hours/month may qualify for federal health benefits. The internships are paid directly by the host agency.

Prestige

The Pathways Program is a respected and competitive entry point into federal government careers, offering a rare chance for students to build real experience in diplomacy and civil service. Completing the internship can lead to non-competitive eligibility for permanent jobs in the federal system. It is highly regarded by colleges, scholarships, and employers for demonstrating initiative and interest in public service.
