Smithsonian Internships

The Smithsonian Institution offers a wide range of internships across its 21 museums, research centers, cultural programs, and the National Zoo. Programs typically last 6 to 10 weeks and are available in in-person, hybrid, or remote formats depending on the host office. Interns contribute to real projects in areas like museum education, conservation, archival work, scientific research, and public engagement.

Eligibility and Application Information

Most internships are open to high school, college, or graduate students, with some programs designed specifically for underrepresented minorities or first-generation students. Applications are submitted via the Smithsonian Online Academic Appointment System (SOLAA) and usually include a résumé, transcript, statement of interest, and letters of recommendation. Deadlines vary by program, but summer internship applications typically close between January and March

Pay

While some Smithsonian internships are unpaid, many now offer stipends between $1,500 and $8,000, depending on the program and duration. Paid programs include the Youth Access Grant Internship, Internship in Museum Practice, and various science-focused internships. Some funding is merit-based or need-based, and additional travel or housing support may be offered for select roles.

Prestige

Smithsonian internships are considered highly prestigious due to their national recognition, academic rigor, and professional networking opportunities. Interns work alongside leading curators, researchers, educators, and scientists, and often go on to pursue advanced education or competitive careers in their fields. Having a Smithsonian internship on a résumé signals strong initiative, cultural literacy, and research or communications skills.
