Simons Summer Research Program

The Simons Summer Research Program offers high school juniors the opportunity to engage in hands-on research in science, math, or engineering at Stony Brook University. Participants work closely with faculty mentors, learning laboratory techniques and contributing to ongoing research projects. The program culminates in a poster symposium where students present their findings.

Eligibility and Application Information

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, currently in 11th grade, and at least 16 years old by the program's start date. The application requires a school nomination, official transcript, two letters of recommendation (preferably from math or science teachers), and an online application. The program is highly selective. 

Pay

There is no tuition fee for the program; however, participants are responsible for housing, meals, and transportation costs. For those staying on campus, the estimated cost is approximately $2,360.25, which includes dorm fees, a starter meal plan, and health services. Upon completion, students receive a stipend to offset some expenses.

The Simons Summer Research Program is a prestigious and competitive opportunity, with an acceptance rate around 5%. It provides students with valuable research experience and exposure to academic life at a major research university.
