California Academy of Sciences - Careers in Science

This is a multi-year, year-round internship that begins in 9th or 10th grade for San Francisco Unified School District students. Interns conduct after-school and weekend fieldwork, facilitate science engagement for museum visitors, attend workshops and college tours, and serve on leadership councils. The program culminates in contributions to Academy research, exhibits, and public outreach efforts.
Eligibility and Application Information
Applicants must be SFUSD 9th or 10th graders, maintain a GPA of ≥2.5 with at least a C in math and science, hold a valid work permit, and commit to 2–3 years of after-school and weekend participation through graduation. The application window typically runs from February to April, followed by a group interview in mid-April. Selection is competitive—around 44 interns are chosen annually from hundreds of SFUSD applicants.
Pay
Interns are paid above California minimum wage, earning a stipend during their employment. There are no fees or tuition, and all work hours, including training and events, are compensated.
Prestige
CiS is a selective, prestigious program, known for its 2022 Presidential Award for Excellence in STEM Mentoring and for producing STEM-focused alumni—95% go on to earn college degrees, with many entering science fields. With fewer than 50 interns selected from SFUSD each year, the program is highly regarded for its immersive experience in real-world science and public engagement.
