General Information

This is an annual national contest open to talented high school artists across 10 disciplines, including visual arts, writing, music, dance, theater, and film. Selected winners receive cash awards, masterclasses with leading artists, and the opportunity to participate in National YoungArts Week, a weeklong program with workshops, critiques, and performances. Finalists may qualify for nomination to the U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts.

Eligibility

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents in grades 10–12 or ages 15–18 at the time of submission. Students must submit work in one of the eligible artistic disciplines and may apply in multiple categories. There are no GPA or academic requirements—selection is based purely on artistic merit.

Application Process

Applications open in June and are typically due in mid-October, requiring a portfolio or audition video, artist statement, and optional recommendation letter. Applicants pay a $35 fee per category, which can be waived for financial need. Finalists are notified in December, with National YoungArts Week held the following January.

Impact & Recognition

YoungArts is nationally renowned, with alumni including artists like Timothée Chalamet, Viola Davis, and Tarell Alvin McCraney. Finalists often receive college scholarships, mentorships, and professional performance opportunities. The program is highly competitive and prestigious, significantly enhancing college applications and careers in the arts.
