General Information

This is a week-long program in Washington D.C. for two high school students from each state. It is held annually in early March, called Washington Week. Participants meet many members of the federal government such as the President and Senators. Includes deep exposure to national policy, the legislative process, and public service careers.

Eligibility

Must be a high school junior or senior by the time of the application. Must hold a student government or civic leadership position during the current academic year. Must attend school in the U.S. Be U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

Application Process

Applications are handled state-by-state. Each state's Department of Education sets its own process and deadlines (usually due August-October). General application components often include: essay questions on government and leadership, resume or activity sheet, transcript, letters of recommendation, and sometimes an exam or interview. To apply, search for “U.S. Senate Youth Program [Your State]” to access your state’s application portal or contact your school counselor.

Impact & Recognition

It is one of the most prestigious government-related high school programs in the U.S. Alumni go on to top colleges, government careers, and competitive fellowships (e.g., Truman, Rhodes, Fulbright). Delegates join a lifelong network of USSYP alumni, many of whom hold leadership positions in public service and law. Each selected delegate also receives a $10,000 college scholarship, funded by the Hearst Foundations.
