General Information

This is 2-week residential summer engineering design program. It introduces students to various engineering disciplines through hands-on challenges, design projects, and exposure to global issues like sustainable nuclear energy and AI hardware. Also covers computer hardware design, AI processing, and the intersection of engineering with societal issues like nuclear waste management.

Eligibility

It is open to rising high school juniors and seniors. It prioritizes U.S. citizens and permanent residents from groups historically underrepresented in science, engineering, and technology, including students of color, women, and those from low-income or first-generation backgrounds

Application Process

Applicants fill out an online application by early April, providing academic background, essays, and recommendations . Selections are made based on academic performance, writing quality, and strength of references, and 20 students are accepted. Applicants receive notification in mid-May, and accepted students complete any needed paperwork.

Impact & Recognition

The Program is highly regarded for providing underrepresented high school students with early, immersive exposure to engineering and technology through hands-on projects and mentorship. Many alumni pursue competitive STEM degrees and careers, often crediting PREFACE as a pivotal experience in shaping their academic and professional paths.
